A Letter From Armory Foundation President, Dr. Norbert Sander

"Life is Elsewhere"

Dear Friends of High School Track & Field,

To borrow the title of Milan Kundera’s epic novel that “Elsewhere” was here at the New Balance Nationals this past long weekend at the Armory. Over 4,000 student-athletes from 40 states competed in what is now clearly the "world’s most famous indoor track arena.” National teams from around the world would envy having the extraordinary performances of these finely tuned track athletes. Over 5 national records were set, but the overall athleticism during these three days can easily match that seen in any professional venue nationwide. More importantly, over 90% of these high school track & field athletes will be going onto college, some to continue the sport, most to study. In a world of growing uncertainty, the positive message of these dedicated outstanding young Americans is clear and firm: when they step up to the line, they intend to give you nothing but their very best. And they follow through on that promise.

Our profound thanks to the City of New York, our agency DHS and the elected officials who have supported the growth of the Armory over the years. Track does not pay for itself and to host our season of over 110 track events, we depend on the support of our partners, especially the NYRR, New Balance and Emblem Health, as well as the donations from those who believe in the Armory’s mission.

I would ask those of you who have not visited and witnessed this tremendous New York success story to come and be part of it, especially for the upcoming 2015-2016 season. We still have our final events this month: the Front Runners Invitational on March 17th, organized for over 20 years by New York City’s vibrant LGBT community, our final open Youth Event on March 22nd and finally the Uptown Games on March 28th, a tribute to the leadership of State Senator Adriano Espaillat and Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, here in Washington Heights.

It has been a season to remember and all I can sincerely say is thank you.

Respectfully,
Norbert
