Florida Distance Athletes Preview - New Balance Indoor

The South in general and Florida even more so, treats indoor track with a different level of intensity than the rest of the nation.  With only a smattering of Floridians competing at the New Balance Indoor Nationals Meet in New York City this weekend, it will be interesting to see if the "outdoor" Floridian distance runners can adapt to the "indoor" environment, smaller track and tighter turns, aspects of competing indoors that has hampered many Southerners in the past.

Here's a who's who of the Florida distance contingent:

BOYS

800 Meters

Daniel Dey, Junior, Olympia HS

Fri 11 Mar, 2:30 PM 800 emerging Elite, Heat 5

PR's:

800 1:56.01

1600 4:24.24

Off to a great season so far dipping below 2 flat running 1:59.42 at the Harmony Invitational. Daniel's not afraid to push the pace early and he will need to get out fast as it's hard to make moves at the back end of an indoor race.

MILE

Tyler Cardillo, Senior, Charlotte HS, Signed with Florida

Sun 13 Mar, 1:49 PM, Section 2

PR's:

800 1:53.15

1500 3:57.02

1600 4:18.06

Tyler cemented his inclusion in the fast heat of the Boy's mile after his impressive 3:57.15 win (4:16.05 mile equivalent) at the flrunners.com Primetime meet.  For Tyler to have success in this stacked field, he'll need to be on the back end of the pack and make a late run to the finish where his strength will be to his advantage.

TWO MILE

David Kilgore, Senior, Holy Trinity, committed to Colorado

Sun 13 Mar, 9:15 AM, Section 1

PR's:

1600 4:24.66

3200 9:34.49

5000 15:14.00

David will be attempting to double back from the 5K on Friday when he competes in the first section of the Two Mile on Sunday.  The 2010 1A State 1600 champion and 2011 1A State XC champion has had a great spring with some great work-outs.  He's been consistently a mid 4:20/mid 9:30 type runner this spring and this is a great opportunity to show his current fitness and be competitive in the Deuce with a solid effort. A strength runner who needs to run on but not over the edge.

5000 Meters

Joey Castagnaro, Junior, Holy Trinity
Fri 11 Mar, 7:30 PM, Section 1

PR's:

1600 4:30.31

3200 9:40.85

5000 15:40

Joey has been coming back slowly from injury and isn't in top form right now but this will be a good opportunity to gain indoor running experience.  The key will be exerting a good effort for all 24 laps and hopefully be happy that he is progressing with his comeback.

David Kilgore, Senior, Holy Trinity, committed to Colorado

Fri 11 Mar, 7:30 PM, Section 2

PR's:

1600 4:24.66

3200 9:34.49

5000 15:14.00

The 2010 1A State 1600 champion and 2011 1A State XC champion has had a great spring with some great work-outs.  He's been consistently a mid 4:20/mid 9:30 type runner this spring and this is a great opportunity to step up in distance and compete in the fast section of the 5000. He will also compete in the Two Mile on Sunday morning.

Daniel Moore, Junior, Holy Trinity

Fri 11 Mar, 7:30 PM, Section 1

PR's:

1600 4:34.00

3200 9:44.14

5000 15:44.00

Daniel is also coming back from an injury that has slowed his progress this spring to date.  The 5K will be a good test of his fitness at this point in time and also build indoor experience going forward.

Girls

4x1 Mile Relay Holy Trinity
Aly Cobb, Kalli Corcoran, Lori Frazier, Brianna Wahy
Sat 12 Mar, 11:45 AM
A core contingent from Holy Trinity's 1A State Cross-Country Championship team, Coach Butler's relay team will test their mettle against 10 other very good teams primarily from the Northeast.

5000
Shelby Davidson, Junior, Cocoa Beach
Fri 11 Mar, 6:45 PM, Section 1

PR's:

1600 5:07.06

3200 10:58.16

5000 17:36.00

After garnering national recognition by finishing 9th at Foot Locker South and becoming a Foot Locker finalist, Shelby continues to lower her personal bests in the 1600 and the 3200 and shows she is in really good shape going into Indoor Nationals.  Being in the slower of the two 5K heats, Shelby should be in contention for the win in her heat if she races smartly, especially after a solo 10:58 late in the day last Friday at the Holy Trinity Invitational where she made the race look easy and controlled.

Mackenzie Dummer, Sophomore, Holy Trinity

Fri 11 Mar, 6:45 PM, Section 1

PR's

1600 5:28.91

3200 11:33.7

5000 18:42.65

Another up and coming runner from Holy Trinity in Melbourne, Mackenzie is also getting valuable national level experience.  With a PR of 18:42 in the 5K this last fall, this is a great opportunity for Mackenzie to run fast indoors.

Erika Fluehr, Senior, Community School of Naples, Signed with Princeton
Fri 11 Mar, 6:45 PM, Section 2

PR's:

1600 4:54.89

3200 10:29.89

5000 16:58.72

2011 1A State Cross Country Champion and 2 time Foot Locker finalist, Erika is off to a sensatational 2011 Track campaign. Being called up at the last moment to compete in the Brooks PR meet Deuce didn't phase Erika in the least as she blasted a new PR going 10:30.92 that was good enough for 10th.  She followed by great performance a week later at the flrunners.com primetimg 5K going sub 17 on the track, finishing in 16:58.72 behind her twin sister, Kathryn.  It will help being in the second heat as this race is guaranteed to be fast from the start and should result in a lot of fast times across the board.

Kathryn Fluehr, Senior, Community School of Naples, Signed with Princeton
Fri 11 Mar, 6:45 PM, Section 2

PR's:

1600 4:53.83

3200 10:18.29

5000 16:50.27

2010 1A State Cross-Country runner-up and 2 time Foot Locker finalist.  Kathryn, much like her twin sister Erika is having great success so far this spring following a stellar fall Cross-country seaon.  As one of the invited Gold ticket recipients for the Brooks PR meet in Seattle, Kathryn ended up 15th running 10:48.25 and followed up that effort a week later winning the flrunners.com Primetime 5K meet in 16:50.27.  On a good day, both Erika and Kathryn could surprise for the victory but they don't have the most lethal kicks and will have to start their push to the finish from a long way's out.

Teresa Ristow, Senior, Holy Trinity, Signed with Florida State
Fri 11 Mar, 6:45 PM, Section 1

PR's:

1600 5:18.10

11:29.08

5000 17:49

Teresa is following up on her stellar senior cross-country season where she was the 3rd best Florida senior behind the Fluehr twins and eventually won the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Senior meet.  This will be a good opportunity to see a national level 5K indoors and build off of her efforts so far this Spring as she aims to significantly lower her 5K PR from 17:49

Bryce SeymourSophomore, Hagerty
Fri 11 Mar, 6:45 PM, Section 1

PR's:

1600 5:40.28

3200 11:39.73

5000 18:56.46

Bryce is an up and coming Sophomore who loves to compete and someone whose time should start dropping significantly in the future.  This is great experience at the National level.

Julie Wollrath, 8th Grade, Holy Trinity
Fri 11 Mar, 6:45 PM, Section 1

PR's:

1600 5:09.61

3200 11:05.11

5000 17:34.00

Julie is one of the nations top young runners and is getting race savvy as evidenced by her holding off a charging Shelby Davidson 2 weeks ago at the Highlander Invitational running a PR 11:05.11.  I fully expect that if Julie keeps it close to the front pack that she will surprise a good portion of the field with her fitness.
